IT TOOK US LONGER THAN NORMAL TO get ready for the day. The walk to the inn was meandering. We held hands, smiled at one another as the birds chirped, and groaned continuously as we walked the five-minute path.

“I feel old, Bay,” he said as he held open the door to the family living quarters. “Like ... really, really old.”

“You can’t be old. You just said you’re virile.”

“Oh, I’m virile.” He gave me a pat on the rear end and then pulled up short when he caught sight of Aunt Tillie. Today, she’d decided to forego camouflage altogether. She was dressed in what looked to be an antique military outfit ... complete with bayonet. “Going after the Redcoats?” he asked.

Aunt Tillie brightened. “How did you know?”

“Just a guess.”

I cocked my head as I regarded her. “Has Mom seen that outfit?”

“I don’t answer to your mother,” Aunt Tillie snapped. “How many times do I have to tell you that?”

“Until I believe it.”

“Well, believe it.” She squared her shoulders. “If I did care about your mother’s opinion, I might be trying to get under her skin because she warned me that I couldn’t wear anything in my closet to your wedding.”

Ah, now we were getting somewhere. “Are you wearing that?” I wasn’t opposed to it. The photos would look weird, but I figured they would be odd anyway given the circumstances ... and Clove’s impressive girth.

“I’m considering it.” Aunt Tillie’s smile told me she was fully prepared to drive my mother over the cliffs of insanity this morning.

“I thought you wanted to be the flower witch,” Landon countered. “Isn’t that what you were babbling on and on about two weeks ago? Bay got you a dress so you’ll fit in with the wedding party. Now that Clove likely won’t be able to stand up for Bay, I figured you could serve as another bridesmaid.”

I hadn’t even considered that. “Oh ... I don’t have enough attendants.” I shot him a worried look. “You have two brothers and Marcus. I have Thistle ... and Thistle.”

Landon was calm. “Clove will probably be there. She just might not be able to stand up.”

“I still don’t have enough attendants.” Now I was frustrated. “Why don’t I have more friends?”

He chuckled. “You have friends.”

“Obviously not.”

“Ask Scout or Stormy.”

“I can’t do that.” I was exasperated. “It’s the last second. They can’t get dresses. On top of that, they’ll know I asked them because I was desperate this close to the ceremony.”

“I don’t see the problem.” Landon clearly wasn’t in the mood to play out some huge drama this morning, especially when it involved dresses. “Why does it matter if we have an even number of attendants.”

“Because I don’t want you to win.”

“Oh, well ... .” He exhaled heavily. “The attendants thing will work itself out. We’ll force Aunt Tillie into a dress if it comes to that.”

“I’m wearing what I want to wear,” Aunt Tillie shot back. “I’m also bringing props.”

Landon eyed the bayonet and then muttered something under his breath.
